Southwest Junior High School, located at 32nd and Bryant Streets, was opened during the 1956-57 school year and named for the section of the city it was located. At the time of the school's opening, it was located in the southwest area of Little Rock. The city has grown toward the west leaving the school in a slightly west central part of the city.
During the first week of school in 1956, the students voted on Red and Black as the school colors and the Mustang as the school mascot.
